Snoopy Rock
TRAIL STATS
Snoopy Rock is a rock formation sitting on a bluff above Sedona that resembles the beloved cartoon dog lying on his back. If you’re brave enough to climb up onto Snoopy’s belly, you’ll be rewarded with excellent views of Sedona.
Trail Description
When I started out on this hike, I had no idea what Snoopy Rock was supposed to look like, and I imagined it would be shaped like Snoopy’s head. When I finally spotted this rock formation sitting on a high bluff, I realized that must be him lying on his back. Still, I couldn’t decide which side was his head until I saw some pictures from the other side that made it look more obvious. That lone gray rock on the right side is his nose, silly! So yeah, if it doesn’t look too much like Snoopy to you, you’re not alone, but it’s still cool.
Sombart Lane Trailhead
The sign at this trailhead calls it Margs Draw Trailhead, but a map online calls it Sombart Lane Trailhead. Just know it goes by both names because the signs don’t always agree.
From the trailhead, you’ll start on Margs Draw Spur Trail and go up a small hill and across a road. Soon you’ll be on a nice, flat trail heading toward Margs Draw Trail.
You’ll see a group of red and white rock spires ahead, and Snoopy Rock sits just below the farthest left spire. It’s actually a smaller red formation in front of it.
At just under half a mile, you’ll come to the junction with Margs Draw Trail. The sign marks the official trails, which go left and right, but you’ll actually go straight across onto an unofficial trail to Snoopy Rock. This unofficial trail is narrower, but enough people have hiked on it that it’s pretty easy to follow.
As you continue, you’ll go along the right side of the bluff that has Snoopy Rock on it. At this point, you can start to imagine Snoopy’s silhouette.
You’ll eventually get to a point where you are able to follow the trail up onto the red rock bluff. I tried my best to stay on trail through this section, but it was hard because there are a lot of different paths. As long as you’re roughly following the route and you stick to the paths that are already worn, you’ll probably get there.
Snoopy Rock
Once atop the red rock bluff, you’ll head back to the left toward Snoopy Rock. The trail comes up right by his belly, and that’s when you’ll realize there’s a little bit of easy scrambling to get on top. I was alone, but it still felt safe enough to do on my own.
The top of his belly is flat, but it’s very narrow and a little unsettling if you’re walking on it, especially if it’s a bit windy. Take a seat and enjoy the views.
Your perch up there feels pretty epic, the rock spires around you are beautiful and majestic, and the views are fantastic. Thanks, Snoopy!
